Great hospitality at Hotel Weisses Kreuz in Bregenz. The owner loved Tour de Satoshi and happily agreed to sponsor my stay.

Summary of day 6 of Tour de Satoshi: Bitcoin wins! But flat tires, rain, wind and snow.

--

Boy do I have a story for you today. It all started with a sneak-peek from behind the curtains of my hotel room and catching a glimpse of the heavy snowfall which would foreshadow the rest of day 6 from Chur to Bregenz. The snow, wind and rain aside, I wasn’t prepared for what came next.

After less than ten kilometers of cycling into the day’s long planned journey, I noticed that my rear tire was flat. Examining it further, I realized that the wire from inside the tire had punctured a hole into the inner tube. So, I had to cut that wire and put a new tube in which cost me a good thirty minutes. To add to my misery, since the entire thirty minutes was spent in the snow, my shoes and overshoes were soaking wet and the cold was seeping through my socks and creating that ‘oh no!’ feeling when you realize, it’s going to be cold feet and numb toes for the rest of the day!

The wire quite literally punched a hole into the inner tube.

You would think that this would be enough to call it a bad start but just another three kilometers, the same thing happened again, another flat tire created by the wire from the tire going into the inner tube. This time, I had to throw the entire tire out and use my spare. Another 1.5 hours of delay and even worse wet feet. By the end of day 6, my feet were so wet, cold and numb that it took a good thirty minutes of gluing my feet onto the heater at night for the sense to slowly come creeping painfully back into them.

Thankfully the bus stop this time gave me shelter, preventing me from standing too long directly in the snow.
As my last inner tube also had a hole now, using a new one was no option and I had no choice but to repair it.

Having already spent a lot of energy and time repairing my tires coupled with my ice-cold feet, I struggled a lot with finishing the rest of the 80 kilometers. But as all your supportive messages kept on repeating in my head, I could hear the chants cheering me on and I knew that I wanted to tell a success story for this post tonight. So, I powered through the rain, snow and headwind and finally completed the 90 km journey to arrive in Bregenz at 6pm in the dark.

Although the excitement doesn’t show through my exhausted face, I was actually ecstatic to see the sign and know that I had finally arrived in Bregenz.

As tough as the cycling day was, the hotel search came fairly easy. In fact, the first hotel that I went to was Hotel Weisses Kreuz where I was lucky enough to meet the owner in the lobby. She got excited about Tour de Satoshi and without hesitation agreed to sponsor my stay. She — a lovely Austrian lady — admitted that she was too old for wanting to own bitcoin but was sure that she could offer the payment to her staff. With that said, she told me to first get a hot shower and some rest while she figured out how to handle the bitcoin transaction. If anyone is keeping score, it’s 4:2 for bitcoin.

Every day, I wake up to your words of encouragement and supportive shares and likes of my posts. Some of you have even written me that you mutually look forward to reading my stories each day so thank you for all the love. It truly keeps me going. On that note, until tomorrow, peace.
